Open to all age groups from Modified to Open, Benalla Netball Association’s Saturday Winter Competition will get under way on 17th April.

The competition will run for 12 weeks, followed by three weeks of finals for those sections which have finals.

Netta will also commence on Saturday 17 April, at 9.00 am. This competition is open to boys and girls who were born in 2002 or earlier.

Whatever your opinion on the decommissioning of Lake Mokoan might be, the debacle of last week surely brings the standard of democracy in the State of Victoria into serious question.

On Thursday 4 March 2010, Water Minister Tim Holding, accompanied by invited Benalla Rural City councillors, Goulburn Murray Water representatives and a band of reporters, gathered for a significant event – breaching the Lake Mokoan wall.

Tim Holding is the State Labor Member for Lyndhurst in Melbourne’s south-east. Bill Sykes is the Nationals MLA for Benalla. And yet the elected member for our electorate was banned from last Thursday’s official decommissioning event. The Member for Lyndhurst was apparently too afraid to come face to face with the Member for Benalla, for fear he might express conflicting views – views representing country people. So much for freedom of speech in a healthy democracy!

Bill Sykes was not invited, refused entry and watched closely by security, as he observed proceedings from a distance behind a wire mesh fence. Doesn’t say much for the State Government’s respect for the people of the Benalla electorate does it?

Sykes has been a long-time, outspoken opponent of the decommissioning. Tim Holding’s explanation of barring Sykes was that the event should not be a forum for protest. Bill Sykes maintains that, had he been invited, he would have behaved in a civil manner and not caused any disruption, as Benalla constituents should expect of their member.

Of further, if not greater concern, is that the Auditor-General’s report into the decommissioning process is due to be handed down this week. But the Lake Mokoan wall has already been breached, thus making a mockery of the Auditor–General’s role in this supposed democratic State of Victoria.

On Sunday 28 February, more than 1600 people took part in the  Act to Defeat Motor Neurone Disease, raising $53,000 for research into the debilitating disease. Committee spokesman Mr. Jim Myconos said, “It was a celebration of a community, and reinforced how much the Rodger family is valued and respected.”

On what proved to be a very special community day, people of all ages and abilities walked, cycled or ran around Lake Benalla in support of the MND cause.

The day began early with two well supported bike rides; the short tour, a 24 kilometre ride, and the long tour, an impressive 89 kilometre road trip towards Tatong. First over the line (it wasn’t a race!) for the long ride was Peter Jones from Ballarat, whilst Mick Doyle from Cobram arrived home first on the short ride, hotly pursued by local identity Brian Harrington.

At 10.00 am an enormous crowd departed to walk around the lake. White tee shirts filled the view as far as the eye could see, as they trickled around the lake united by the cause.

On what turned out to be a beautiful autumnal day, the walk was followed by approximately 35 relay teams who gathered from as far away as Melbourne and Albury, to run around the picturesque banks of Lake Benalla.

The Rodgers family featured very strongly in the relays, with Dene Rodger running the last leg for the winning team, the Benalla Saints Sports Club, and Georgia Rodger running the first and last leg for the winner of the women’s event, North East Blaze. Players from the Melbourne-based netball club, with whom Georgia and fellow Benalla girl Maddi Hickey now play, supported the event strongly.

In the premier events, North East Blaze player Stacey Gannon claimed the Queen of the Lake title, and Daniel Maher, former Benalla Saints player, was crowned the King of the Lake.

The crowd was entertained all day by fantastic MC, Wes Cusworth, lively music was provided by Jazzeratta Big Band, and Scott Solimo provided a carnival feel to the day. Michael Teague added colour as he conducted a vibrant auction of sporting memorabilia.

The generosity of local people and small businesses was again a feature of the Michael Rodger Walk to Defeat Motor Neurone Day. A superb necklace and magnificent mountain bike were donated for the event. Slabs of ice cold watermelon provided welcome sustenance for those completing the lap of the lake, as did the wonderful food cooked by members of the Benalla Rotary Club. Throughout the lead-up week, and on the day was an army of over 150 volunteers assisting with every task from registrations to setting up venues.

The highlight of the day was an impassioned speech by Robyn Smith. She spoke of husband Mick’s pride in the collective efforts of people working together to make a positive difference and fight for a cure for MND.

This is the third year the event has been run, contributing over $150,000 to research into the disease.

“Money is still coming in, so it is not too late for anyone who wishes to make a donation,” Jim Myconos said.  Jim can be contacted on 5762 1817 at She’s Arty.

It is apt to finish with one of Mick’s favourite quotes:  ‘Life is not about you, but what you can do for others’.

That’s how the Thoona Wheelie Bin Races came about! So, on Saturday 27 February 2010, the Thoona Progress Association staged the eleventh annual event, as these weird and wonderful racing beasts took to the descent down Sargeant Street. Racing was not limited to kids – blokes got in on the act too – kindly referred to by the M.C. as “mature-age kids”.

Young Ben Lyons, riding Crazy Cow took out the overall honours with the fastest time of the afternoon. For the Lyons family, it was a team effort by Ben, his sister Sarah and father Ian. Mum reckons she provided the moral support!

Not everyone can be a champion – there have to be Cooda Bins!

RULES AND REGULATIONS – please read very carefully
1. All competitors enter and dance at this competition at their own risk.
2. Competition is open to both amateur and professional dancers.
3. AGE LIMITS:
3.1 Age is to be taken from 1st January. In the case of a query of a competitor’s age a birth certificate will be required to be produced.
4. ADJUDICATOR:
4.1 The decisions of the adjudicators are final and no discussion or correspondence can be entered into.
4.2 No person may communicate with the adjudicator during the course of the competition.
4.3 No competitor is eligible to enter if they have attended any class conducted by the adjudicator on a regular basis in the 3 months prior to their appearance at the eisteddfod.
5. COPYRIGHT:
5.1 In accordance with federal statutes, competitors must use original material or have permission from the relevant owners of copyright. The committee will not be held responsible for any copyright infringements.
5.2 Competitors who leave a dance school are not allowed to perform any routines taught by the previous teacher. A competitor who has transferred to a new dancing school is ineligible to compete for a period of three months from the date of leaving previous school.
6. TIME LIMITS:
6.1 Time limits must be strictly adhered to. Competitors going over time limits will be disqualified. ALL performances will be timed.
6.2 Timing commences once a competitor enters the stage or the music starts, which ever comes first.
7. BOOKING IN:
7.1 Competitors must “book in” at least 30 minutes prior to the commencement of each item or they will be liable to disqualification.
8. BACKSTAGE:
8.1 Parents are not permitted backstage unless by prior arrangement with the stage manager on duty.
9. PROMPTING:
9.1 No prompting is permitted side stage.
10. RESTARTS:
10.1 A competitor who commences performing an item and stops will be allowed to restart the item at the end of the section for a critique only. However, if the restart is caused by technical fault of equipment, or wrong tape, restart will be tolerated provided the fault is quickly corrected.
11. LIMITED COMPETITION:
11.1 A competitor can only appear once in any section except for troupe interchanges.
11.2 The eisteddfod reserves the right to cancel or combine any section at their discretion. Where large entries are received in a section this may be divided at the discretion of the eisteddfod.
11.3 Troupes must have a minimum of 5 competitors or they compete for a critique only. Entries must be accompanied by a list showing name and age of each troupe member to be accepted.
11.4 Competitors entering solo sections shall only enter their own age groups and either OPEN or NOVICE as appropriate, not both. If a particular section is not offered in an age group competitors can enter the next available age group.
11.5 Any competitor who has won 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in any specific section, regardless of age group, at any competition, must enter as OPEN for that specific section.
11.6 No routine may be performed again except in the case of Male Only Solo.
11.7 Competitors will appear in the order in which they are listed in the program, and if not present when called will be liable to disqualification.
12. TROUPE INTERCHANGES: Teachers entering two or more troupes in the same section will be allowed an interchange of two (2) performers.
13. ENTRY FEES:
13.1 Competitors are not entitled to a refund in cases of non-appearance in any section.
14. CASH PRIZES:
14.1 Where there is a tie for a cash prize, it will be equally divided between the winners.
15. PROTESTS:
15.1 Any complaint made by an individual against the organization or the adjudication of the event must be made in writing, giving the complainant’s full name and address, and shall be lodged with the organizer on the day of the event and no later than 48 hours after the event. Such complaint must be accompanied by a $20.00 fee which is non refundable if the complaint is deemed frivolous.
15.2 Rehearsing on stage is prohibited, and will result in disqualification.
16. AUDIO EQUIPMENT AND EFFECTS:
16.1 Taped sound should be on a cassette tape or CD (do not use re-writable CDs) and of a satisfactory standard. CDs or tapes should contain one track only. Competitors will be responsible for their own tape which must be CLEARLY MARKED WITH NAME, SECTION AND CUED ready for the operator to play. The tape operator will be an independent party. It is recommended that there be at least 30 seconds of blank tape at the end of each item recorded.
16.2 Vocals on tapes are NOT permitted for song and dance or song and tap sections.
16.3 Pre-recorded tapping is not permitted in any tap, song and tap or demi-tap sections.
16.4 No special lighting effects may be used for solo/duo/trio sections.
16.5 Special lighting effects MAY be used for troupes. However a lighting cue sheet must be handed to the stage manager 24 hours prior to the event.
16.6 Lights may be attached to competitor’s scenery and backdrops, but not to theatre curtains.
16.7 Naked flames, fuel lamps, lighted cigarettes, fireworks or apparatus capable of causing fire or smoke are NOT permitted. Approved smoke machine excepted. (Available for hire at a cost of $20, only for troupes).
16.8 The front curtain will not be used for solo/duo/trio sections. The mid curtain may be used.
16.9 All props must be removed from the stage area on the day of use, and not stored back stage.
17. GENERAL RULES:
17.1 No videos or cameras are permitted to be used in the auditorium. Offenders will be removed and the film or image will be destroyed.
17.2 No mobile phones or pagers. The use of these during the competition is strictly prohibited. Please remember to switch off while in the auditorium.
18. ROSIN: No rosin is allowed within the theatre premises. This is a direction from venue management. Any student not adhering to this rule will be liable for disqualification.
19. BODY PIERCING: The Committee holds no responsibility for dancers who obtain a physical injury caused directly by any form of body piercing. The Committee strongly advises the removal of body piercing by competitors during their performance.
20. SECTIONS:
20.1 Ballet – shall be based on classical techniques. In solos, short ballet tutus to be worn by girls; props and accessories NOT to be used.
20.2 Demi-Character – a clear portrayal of a character or story by acting ability and expressive dancing using classical technique. Use of props is permitted.
20.3 National – a theatrically choreographed presentation of a Folk Dance. Dance, costume and music should be authentic of the country portrayed.
20.4 Neo-Classical/Contemporary – modern creative styles.
20.5 Song and Dance – any dance style can be used, but no tapping allowed.
20.6 Song and Tap – dance style shall be tapping only.
20.7 Song and Dance/Tap – All vocal work must be performed live by members of the item. If recorded music is used, it must NOT contain any speaking or singing. No assistance with singing, this includes teachers or non-members of the group.
20.8 Jazz – shall include Jazz, Disco, Cabaret, and Musical Comedy (Musical Theatre) Styles.
20.9 Demi-Tap – a clear portrayal of a character or story by acting ability and expressive dancing using tap technique. Use of props is permitted.
20.10 Voice Over – any dance style can be used, including tapping. Vocals to be performed with a backing track which contains vocals – either speaking or singing.
20.11 Slow Jazz -
20.12 Spiritual/Negro Spiritual – modern creative styles showing praise/worship.
20.13 Funk/Hip Hop – commercial style as seen on film clips not to have technical jazz aspects. No classical lines. Must only appear in sections 226 & 227.
21. IMPROVISATION:
21.1 Competitors must wear a plain black leotard with no trim. Hair accessories are permitted.
22. AGGREGATES:
No aggregate points are awarded for NOVICE sections.
22.1 Aggregate points will be awarded to competitors gaining 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or HM in all solo sections only (not including Male Only Solo and Championships). To be eligible for an aggregate a competitor must have a minimum of 6 points. Points are as follows:
1st=5 points, 2nd=3 points, 3rd=2 points, HM=1 point
In the case of a tie, a count back will occur.
22.2 Grand aggregate points will incorporate ALL solo sections including Improvisations and Championships with the exception of Male Only Solo.
23. The Committee reserves the right to amend or refuse any entry on any grounds. Any competitors, relative or a teacher who approaches an adjudicator before or during the competition will cause disqualification of their own student.
24. CHAMPIONSHIPS – UNSEEN CLASS
Competitors must wear a plain black leotard with no trim. Hair to be in a bun with no hair accessories. Short black wrap skirt to be worn for classical class.
3/4 fitted leggings to be worn in jazz and tap class. No jazz pants or shorts.
Class will be scored – this will constitute 1/3 of total championship mark.
Classical class may include pointe work.
25. The Committee reserves the right to refuse any entry.

Meredith Tolliday was a guest of the Siggers, and has kindly sent us these photos and report from the party :

Shannan Siggers celebrated her 21st birthday with a great party at her parents’ Goorambat property on Saturday night.

The lovely garden of Debbie and Steve was the perfect setting for a party, and the decorations and lighting made for a lovely atmosphere.

Friends came from far and wide to help Shannan celebrate, and they partied on into the small hours of the morning.

Her dad spoke about his daughter, from her rocky beginning, to how she had developed into a fine young woman who is a good sportswoman, fun loving and loyal to her friends. How proud he and his wife were of her achievements as she now attends university, training to be an Occupational Therapist.

Her friends from her FCJ College days, and her newer friends from university gave her some special and highly entertaining presentations which made everyone laugh.

A mechanical bucking bull was set up, and many of the young guests and the ”not so young” gave it a go with hilarious results. No serious injuries resulted, except perhaps to prides.

Shannan’s wonderful cake was made by Deb McCabe. Shannan received some lovley presents and she thanked everyone for coming to her party and making it a terrific night for her.

Many of her friends stayed overnight, and Steve and Debbie cooked them all a barbecue breakfast before they headed home.

Robyn Smith, wife of Mick Rodger, has provided this update on Mick, and their family and friends’ endeavours to raise awareness about Motor Neurone Disease, and funds for research into a cure.

Hi,

MND is often labelled a boutique disease because of its 1 in 10,000 incidence in the population. For us as a family this has no meaning, as Michael lost his father to the disease in 2003, and his younger brother in November 2008. This has heightened our desire to ensure we do our part to find a cure to protect those we love, and other potential sufferers from this hideous disease.

This year’s event on Sunday 28 February signifies the third time we have conducted the ‘Act to D-feet MND’ sporting festival around the beautiful Benalla Lake foreshore.

We have raised in excess of $110,000, which is no mean feat for a country town the size of Benalla. Each year has boasted between 1500 and 2000 participants, and all funds raised have gone to research. Already three research projects have been carried out in Mick Rodger’s name.

The day kicks off at 8.30am with two Cycle Events – 89 km and 26 km. At 10.00am it’s Walk the Lake, 11.00am the Team Relay (6 runners – 2km leg) and at 12.00pm King & Queen of the Lake Race. We have wonderful entertainment all day and an auction at the end of the activities. Rotary will once again be cooking snags.

Mick’s health is not good and hard to bear, and I am not sure whether he will be able to join us at the Lake. As a family, our spirits remain quite high largely due to the overwhelming kindness and love we have been shown by family, friends and the community. While we hope to see many of you in Benalla on 28th February, we understand that in some cases that is impossible.
