The Benalla Rural City Australia Day Award Presentations were held at BPACC, on the day communities across the Benalla district congregated to celebrate the 26th of January. Pictured above are the Benalla nominees for Australia Day Awards. Not everyone could be a winner, but the real winner is the Benalla district community, thanks to the countless hours of voluntary service given by all these citizens.

Here is the transcript of all award citations from the 2010 Benalla Australia Day Award Ceremony:

BENALLA RURAL CITY COMMUNITY EVENT OF THE YEAR:

THE MICHAEL RODGER ACT TO D-FEET MND

<img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-9784" style="border: black 1px solid;" title="From left in MND T-shirts, Sarah DeCrespigny, Jim Myconos and Tim Blackwell. The big fella with the fancy jewellery is Benalla Mayor, Cr.
Since its inception in 2007 Benalla’s “Mick Rodger-Act to D-Feet MND” event has become one of the most successful and respected initiatives of its kind in Regional Victoria.

The event has captured the support, imagination and involvement of the local community on many levels. Participation by schools, sporting, business and service clubs has resulted in more than $110,000 being raised for critical research into the causes of Motor Neuron Disease (MND).

The Walk to D-Feet MND is not just about raising money. The objective of the small, hard working committee is as much to raise public awareness and understanding of this debilitating disease.

Since the first event, more that 5000 people have participated on the day by way of walking, cycling or running in the organised events that are centred around Lake Benalla.

The event has galvanised the Benalla Community as well as people from across the State who have been touched by the disease. Thousands of t-shirts, caps, wristbands and merchandise have been sold, with every cent going towards research into the disease.

Benalla’s “Michael Rodger Act to D-Feet MND” is much more than a community event; it is a wonderful example of community spirit and involvement that has touched people right across the country.

BENALLA RURAL CITY YOUNG CITIZEN OF THE YEAR AWARD:

MITCHELL STAFFORD

Mitchell Stafford is an outstanding leader among young people. He has been involved in a number of community events throughout the past year that prove his worthiness for the recipient of the Benalla Rural City Young Citizen of the Year Award.

Mitchell has excelled in his studies, achieving both his Victorian Certificate of Education and his Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning this past year. He has also completed his Certificate II in Information Technology and received the Student of the Term for Benalla College in Term 2.

Mitch has never let an opportunity go by to get involved with community activities. After the horrific black Saturday fires hit the Kilmore district, Mitch volunteered with the Blaze Aid group and participated in 11 days of volunteer bush fire fencing.

Pip Rowe, his VCAL teacher tells of his commitment …
“I had the greatest experience with Mitchell when I attended the Blaze Aid trip to Murrindindi. As Mitch had participated on a number of occasions before, I realized that he and the other volunteers had developed many skills. This day however was a little different. Wishing to make the most of the volunteers, the group was split into two with Benalla Rotarians working on one farm and the young people being sent to another. The farmer we were sent to support was over 80 years old. We met the DSE fire support co-ordinator at the farm and he gave a quick rundown on what needed to be done then said – “So I’ll be off then” I was left with the six young people, one very elderly farmer, post driver, posts and wire. Mitchell from this moment took on the leadership to erect the fence. He sighted the posts, instructed the others on the safety requirements and drove in the posts for the new fence. Once the posts were in to his satisfaction, the wires were threaded, strained and tied off. At the end of the day some 300 metres of new fences had been erected by Mitchell and his crew. These days were long days, yet Mitchell volunteered this time in among his busy Year 12 schooling and still successfully completed both VCE and VCAL.”

Another example of Mitchell’s excellence was in his dedication and organisational skills in co-ordinating the Skate ‘N’ Jam competition in Benalla. This event has become an annual event for Benalla with the day becoming more successful each year.

This year a small group of students were responsible for organising the event. Mitchell was instrumental in organising lunchtime meetings to discuss the event with the year eleven students; he chaired the meetings, wrote agendas and took minutes for these meetings.

He realised the need to put the event on a forum where young people would see it and acknowledge it. He used social networking sites to attract a wide range of people to the event. He designed and printed the promotional poster for the event and organised the t-shirts that were produced for the event.

Mitch networked with freestyle riders to gain sponsorship for the event and to bring recognised riders to the event. He completed the local council approval application and sought approval from all local stakeholders and community organisations for the event. Mitch set the schedule for the competition on the day for the skate, scooter and BMX, liaising with the judges and commentator’s for the day.

His excellent communication skills and leadership qualities were clearly exhibited when one of the adult workers for the main sponsor ‘Dirty Pumper’ was riding his bike on the competition area without a helmet. This could have caused the whole event to be abandoned due to the insurance risk. Mitchell without being prompted by any of his teachers quickly moved onto the area and diplomatically resolved the problem.

The event has received very positive feedback from our community. Over $1000 was raised from the event and donated back to the community for redevelopment of the skate park.

Mitchell has also shown a passion for the Benalla Skate Park redevelopment project. A group of BMX freestyle enthusiasts approached the local MP Bill Sykes for assistance with this project and from this meeting a group was formed to focus on the Skate Park improvement. Mitch attended meetings with this group every Wednesday. This culminated in attendance at a Youth Forum held in Benalla where he was able to vocalise ideas and needs of the Benalla Youth to the Hon. James Merlino MP, Minister of Youth and Sport.

Mitch approached The Rotary Club of Benalla to assist with the fundraising for this project. He worked with the Rotarians to organise a fundraising film night where all profits raised were donated to the skate park improvement fund.

Mitch has never let an opportunity go by to get involved with group and community activities. Mitch has a quiet demeanour but a wonderful ability to see what needs to be done and takes the initiative to go and enquire, find out what others think and then get the job done. His ability to appear to blend in but take the lead in community makes him stand apart from others.

We commend Mitchell Stafford to you… Our Benalla Young Citizen of the Year.

BENALLA RURAL CITY CITIZEN OF THE YEAR AWARD:

MARY-LOU TERRY

Born in Benalla, Mary-Lou was educated at St Joseph’s Primary School and later attended Benalla High School. Apart from leaving Benalla as a 16 year old to work for several years in Melbourne, and a further two years travelling, Mary-Lou has remained a Benalla resident. To say Mary-Lou is parochial to Benalla is an understatement. Mary-Lou has been involved in too many aspects of Benalla to list. She is well known in the sporting community, particularly basketball, including playing, coaching and fostering the development of young players. Even now Mary-Lou can be seen playing basketball at the age of 50!

However, it is Mary-Lou’s volunteer work that is the primary reason for this award.

The past year alone Mary-Lou has been, and still is, involved in the following activities.

* Emergency Child Foster Care (Upper Murray Family Care):- This program cares for children from age 0-16 who for whatever reason find themselves without a roof to live under, or even just needing respite from their circumstances. Mary-Lou’s ongoing commitment to this program has seen a number of the children that have been under Mary-Lou’s care grow up and continue to maintain contact because Mary-Lou has inspired and motivated them to achieve more than may have been likely.

* Benalla Tourism Committee: – with a passion for tourism in the Benalla area, Mary-Lou has worked tirelessly to promote many levels of tourism for Benalla; including the recent Benalla Festival – providing the ‘famous’ Teddy Bear picnic and face painting.

* Benalla Lakeside Craft Market Committee: – The Benalla Lakeside Craft Market Committee is a not for-profit organisation that provides a monthly market in Benalla. The proceeds of the markets go to various charities and promotions for the Benalla area. Past recipients have included the Skate ‘n’ Jam and Balloon Night Glow events.

* Independent Person, Independent Third Person and YRIPP (Youth Referral and Independent Person Program):- This is a volunteer service provided to assist adults, children and people with a mental impairment when being interviewed or providing statements to police. It includes the provision of assistance, advocacy, and reassurance, within the court process. Since taking on this multi faceted role Mary-Lou has travelled to Shepparton, Benalla and Wangaratta on numerous occasions, often in the middle of the night to support people through this program.

Mary-Lou is a mother of two teenagers, one at Benalla College and the other at Bendigo University and amongst all her commitments still finds time for paid employment.

Mary-Lou Terry is an inspirational and motivated person. We acknowledge her passion for making Benalla a better place to live, and celebrate her many achievements in helping those that need support within our community.

BENALLA RURAL CITY BENALLA ACHIEVEMENT AWARD:

ROBYN SMITH

Robyn Smith is passionate about the promotion of inclusiveness in sport. Her professional role as the CEO of Ausrapid (Australian Sport and Recreation Association for Persons with an Intellectual Disability) means that she develops opportunities within organisations for people with intellectual disabilities.

In her community role, Robyn modestly dismisses her own considerable achievements preferring to invest her time heavily in the development of young athletes in the region.

Robyn has conducted extensive coaching clinics for young netballers, developed and delivered targeted workshops for athletes with a disability and, in her professional role, represented Australia as the Chief de Mission of the Sydney Paralympics Team. Her refined organisational skills were also put to great use during the Benalla visit to the Fijian and Welsh Netball Teams who were in Australia for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Robyn’s commitment to young athletes, particularly young women, is paramount. She has coached netball teams at all levels including coaching and participating in six premierships with the Benalla Saints Football Netball Club, conducted netball clinics for 5-8 year olds, Netta for 8-10 year olds, and devoted significant time to the Benalla Little Athletics Club. She even coached a team of young basketball players.

Her skills are not just around encouraging young athletes. She is a resilient and steadfast role model for young people, always well researched, articulate and beautifully presented. She has a generous spirit but is forthright in regard to appropriate behaviour and is a strong advocate for challenging the issue of alcohol and sport.

Robyn is much admired for her energy and enthusiasm. Her considerable administration skills have seen many of the clubs she has been associated with secure grant funding for equipment, uniforms and facilities which would otherwise have been unattainable. She has left a legacy with every club of professional, well documented processes and a respectful culture.

In spite of her enormous commitment to the community, Robyn is the most incredible mother and partner. Her children have all grown to be wonderful people, successful in their chosen fields and contribute to the community themselves.

Robyn has displayed incredible courage and selflessness as she has strived to raise awareness of Motor Neurone Disease.

Robyn has been the driving force behind the “Mick Rodger – Act to D-Feet MND” event which has resulted in more than $110,000 being raised for critical research into the causes of Motor Neurone Disease (MND). This extraordinary event is a wonderful demonstration of community spirit and involvement at a time where most people would retreat. It should be noted, the support this event has enjoyed is only possible due to the high esteem with which Robyn and her partner Michael are viewed in the community.

Robyn is an incredible support to her family and the broader Benalla Community. She greatly deserves this award.

Congratulations Robyn.

BENALLA RURAL CITY DEVENISH ACHIEVEMENT JOINT AWARD

COLIN AND OLIVE HOOPER

Colin was born and bred at Devenish. He and wife Olive live on a farm his grandfather bought in the 1920’s; his great grandfathers having selected ground in Devenish and in the Boxwood area in the early 1870’s.

Colin attended Devenish State School and then moved on to Benalla Technical School. From there he started farming with his father and brother.

Colin was a keen tennis player, was a boundary umpire and he played football for Devenish in his younger days. However, he never lost interest in the local football club. He was goal umpire for many, many years and he is a life member of the now defunct football club. One of Colin’s life ambitions was to see Devenish win a Premiership and that wish came true early this century when Devenish twice won the Flag whilst his son Ashley played in both premiership teams.

Colin was a member of the Methodist Youth Group. Colin is a life member of the Devenish Fire Brigade, he is a Trustee of the Devenish Cemetery and he is a member of the Uniting Church.

Olive came to live at Devenish when she married Colin; they have four children: Christina, Narelle, Kylie and Ashley. Olive became involved with the Ladies Auxiliary of the Football Club early on, and was President for a number of years. She is also a Life Member of the Devenish Football/Netball Club. Olive was actively involved in the Parents Club at the school, holding an office position for a number of years.

Whilst Olive has never played tennis, she has been a wonderful supporter of the Club and been on the committee. Both Olive and Colin have worked hard over the years for the Devenish Sports Club and Recreation Reserve, with Olive being a current committee member.

When the community purchased the Devenish Hotel in 2000 both Olive and Colin were involved in working bees, and Olive took an active role in the kitchen, dining room and cleaning the hotel.

Olive and Colin are people that you can ask to take on any task; they will always be there to help and support our community in any way they can.

Colin and Olive Hooper are both very worthy recipients of the Devenish Australia Day Achievement Award.

BENALLA RURAL CITY MOLYULLAH ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

RACHEL THARRATT

By any measure Rachel Tharratt is an exceptional young person.

In November 2009 Rachel was selected to be FCJ College school captain for the 2010 scholastic year. Her outstanding leadership qualities, particularly her integrity and ability to articulate a vision for the future, were recognised by both her peers and teaching staff. To gain the position, Rachel gave an impressive presentation to a selection panel comprising the College’s principal, assistant principal and members of the school board.

Rachel is an extremely accomplished actor and singer. She has willingly participated in countless school youth masses and liturgies.

In September 2009 Rachel had a leading role in FCJ College’s outstanding production of the hit musical Bye Bye Birdie. Her infectious enthusiasm and capacity for hard work helped to set the standard for the rest of the cast of over fifty students.

One of the truly great persons of the 20th century, Mahatma Gandhi, once said, ‘You must be the change you wish to see in the world’.

Rachel is acutely aware of the environmental, economic, political and social problems facing the world and genuinely wants to make a difference. She sees the world in the 21st century very much as a global community and is passionate about making poverty history in the developing world in her lifetime.

In early 2008, accompanied by her parents and older sister, Rachel assisted with the establishment of an orphanage in Kenya. In doing so she witnessed first hand the enormous gulf between the developed and third world – poor sanitation, youth homelessness on a large scale, lack of educational opportunities, the misery and utter despair caused by the AIDS epidemic and finally economic insecurity exacerbated by the global financial crisis.

In numerous ways Rachel touched the lives of many young children during her first visit to Kenya and in so doing offered these youngsters real hope for a better future.

Following the completion of her studies in November 2009 and numerous fund raising activities, including an all night ‘table tennisathon’ where she raised approximately $1000, Rachel returned to Kenya to continue her work at the orphanage for a further four weeks, returning to Australia just before Christmas.

The Benalla Rural City, and indeed the world, will be a much better place with people like Rachel Tharratt leading it in the 21st century.

We salute Rachel Tharratt: the Molyullah Achievement Award recipient for 2010.

BENALLA RURAL CITY TATONG ACHIEVEMENT JOINT AWARD

Joan and Barry Lewis have worked tirelessly for their community over the past forty years.
This couple have used their organisational skills and initiative for fund raising over a long period of time. They were always in attendance at working bees and both are life members of the Tatong Football/Netball Club.

Barry played football in his early years and Barry and Joan both played tennis for many years. Joan was one of the organisers of the Tennis Tournaments at Tatong for many years. They both held official positions at the tennis club.

Barry and Joan were very actively involved in the building of the Community Rooms at Tatong Recreation Reserve.

Barry and Joan have donated many hours of volunteer work to the Tatong district and continue to do so. Barry and Joan Lewis are a well deserving couple to receive the Tatong Achievement Award.

BENALLA RURAL CITY THOONA ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

ALEC IRVINE

Alec Irvine has given outstanding service to a multitude of community organisations in and around the township of Thoona.

He has not only worked tirelessly for the Thoona Recreation Reserve, but also provided machinery and his farm manager to assist in working bees on many occasions

This Reserve is now named “The AJ Irvine Reserve” in his honour.

Alec was one of the main contributors to the building of the Thoona Tennis courts and pavilion.

Alec was a Trustee of the Thoona Cemetery Trust for many years and again provided machinery and consistently made himself and his employees available to help with improvements.

Alec is an outstanding musician, and was often called on to provide music at the local dances in the Thoona Hall. This led to his involvement with the Hall Committee and once again he worked very hard to keep the Hall in good repair.

Other organisations he was either a member of or a contributor to were:

Meredith Tolliday attended the Goorambat Australia Day celebrations. Meredith reports:

Mick Johnson received the Benalla Rural City Achiever of the Year Award for the Goorambat district on Australia Day. He received a framed certificate and a potted agapanthus plant for his garden.

The Goorambat community enjoyed a cooked breakfast and the flag raising ceremony, whilst singing the National Anthem to the accompaniment of Fiona’s clarinet. Then the presentation was made by Cr. Peter Dunn.

Geoff Heaney, a long time friend of Mick, and last year’s recipient of the same award, gave a very interesting and complimentary address about Mick’s commitment to his community over a long period of time. Mick came to Australia from England and was naturalised in the mid 1980’s.

Mick has been involved in numerous organisations over the years, including the Goorambat Primary School, the Goorambat Football Club and the Goorambat Fire Brigade. He is particularly keen on his work with the local CFA brigade having been involved for some 50 years.

Congratulations Mick!
